Finally a tool for teachers that’s excellent。

Ann Warren

As a reading teacher I feel this should be required reading for all teachers。 When my students used to ask me why something had a certain spelling my best guess was, “Well English is just weird!” 🤷🏻‍♀️ Eide breaks down a surprisingly small set of rules that will give spellers maximum impact。 Very useful information。

Essential。

Well, this book is a game changer if you teach ELA to any students。 I came across this title during my Orton Gillingham training, and my copy is tagged, highlighted and yes。。。 dog-eared。 Truly。。。 there is a logic to the English language。 Every elementary teacher should read this book。 It honestly should be required reading in teaching training classes in college。

Michelle

An excellent resource for academic tutors and dyslexia specialists。 It belongs in your professional resource library。

4。5/5 This in depth analysis of the English language should be required reading for all educators! I've learned lots of spelling rules which will be of immense help for my pupils as they navigate this complicated (but not illogical!) language。 I enjoyed the clear, accessible style of writing and have marked many, many pages that I will refer to time and again when planning lessons for my class。 4。5/5 This in depth analysis of the English language should be required reading for all educators! Loved this book and will recommend it to my SLP students working with literacy。 I would love to see a new edition correct the references to learning styles since this concept has been discredited in research。

A clear and helpful book for anyone teaching children。 The author does a great job explaining English rules and how we can support struggling students。 The book is a great resource with many organized charts。

Kate

Still no explanation of oo variations, but nixing the “I before e” rule entirely was terrific。 If you think English mugged the European languages and ditched what it didn’t like, then this is a fantastic overview of the way our language is。 Also, she points out that the main reason people think English makes no sense is because of progressives intentionally dumbing down the public in their curriculum development to create an ignorant class

Kate

Excellent resource。 Thorough, concise, very clear and well organized。 Going on my shortlist of must have teaching texts for reading intervention。 Anyone, including parents and tutors, working with students with language-based learning disabilities or spelling and decoding deficits can use this。 Spelling bee contenders can also find all the rules here。

Kristen

Imperative information and rules。 The only aspect I’m put off by is her discussion of different types of learners (like auditory, kinesthetic, etc。)。 Many people still believe and tap into the “different type of learners” idea (which has been proven to be false and a myth)。 Instead, we need to tap into various modalities for our students to be able see the whole picture。 Despite this, the rules, examples, and charts were extremely helpful! I will definitely keep this as a reference。

This is a must-read for every teacher!

Katie Proctor

This was pretty fascinating, honestly。 I’ve never thought about teaching English the way we teach foreign languages or that there is an actual logic to English because it can seem so illogical sometimes。 Lots to learn here and think about。

What an exceptional book for teaching/learning English。

Cassandra

Really interesting—many rules that I didn’t know or had forgotten。 My only problem is that more and more I struggle with paper books and finding the right light, no glare, should I take my glasses off etc。

This is an excellent book for teachers and anyone interested in knowing more about the English language- especially rules for spelling。 It discusses spelling rules that cover 98% of English words and the reasons behind some of our English spellings。 It is very systematically written and easy to read, use, and apply。 I loved reading this and it is a great resource in my teaching!

As I dive further into the Science of Reading, I have so many “so why’s “。 This book helped me understand so much!

Krista

So many simple rules that everyone should know but we don’t。 Lots of good ideas and many things that you can easily start using to teach yourself or your kids to help them with both reading and spelling。

This is an excellent book explaining well, the logic behind the English language。 However, it is primarily describing the rules and mostly listing them。 I would’ve loved it if there was more about how those rules came to be and the stories behind the language formation and whatnot。。 but it is a great resource and will make you want to buy the author’s English language curriculum for kids。 It made me want to, anyway 😉。。。 but I didn’t。 Haha Anyways, it’s good but I wish it had been more like 50-50 This is an excellent book explaining well, the logic behind the English language。 However, it is primarily describing the rules and mostly listing them。 I would’ve loved it if there was more about how those rules came to be and the stories behind the language formation and whatnot。。 but it is a great resource and will make you want to buy the author’s English language curriculum for kids。 It made me want to, anyway 😉。。。 but I didn’t。 Haha Anyways, it’s good but I wish it had been more like 50-50 with stories/history/logic to the literal rules。 It is more like 10-25% story/history and 75% listing of rules。 。。。more

This was a fast read but it will be referenced for years to come。 I teach fourth grade and I’m sorry to say I never knew half the rules in this book。 Absolutely must read for any teacher of English。

Kristen Iworsky

A must read and have book for all teachers of English/reading/writing from kindergarten on, and parents of children learning to read。 I typically read a book and pass it on but this is a keeper。

Stephanie Gillogly

Excellent book! I recommend it for every elementary educator out there。 It gives us the why behind so many things we’ve all felt we could not explain to our students。

Melanie Clawson

As a reading interventionist, I thought this book was full of great information。 I grew up an intuitive reader and speller。 I love that this book has explicit rules that I can add to my teaching。 This is really a must read for any teacher。

Jacki

This book blew my mind!! I will recommend this to every teacher, administrator, parent I know! I cannot wait to put what I learned in this book into practice in my classroom❤️

Erika

Great resource for teachers。

Julie

Outstanding resource for me to use to help my students become better spellers。 I was even perplexed and learned so much I had never been taught!

Kathy Tombley

Every teacher should own this book。

I have never really struggled with grammar or vocabulary or reading。 But my children have。 This book was very helpful in understanding how to explain english to my children and to meet them where they are。 I have taken 6 months to slowly go through the book, and my boys have learned many elements within the book over the time。 I look forward to continuing on with the boys and helping to give them some clarity on why English does things the way they do。 Denise Eide also convinced me that learning I have never really struggled with grammar or vocabulary or reading。 But my children have。 This book was very helpful in understanding how to explain english to my children and to meet them where they are。 I have taken 6 months to slowly go through the book, and my boys have learned many elements within the book over the time。 I look forward to continuing on with the boys and helping to give them some clarity on why English does things the way they do。 Denise Eide also convinced me that learning some Latin and Greek would be beneficial for myself and also for my children to help understand English a bit better。 。。。more

I read through this book in a few hours。 It is so insightful and one I’d recommend all teachers read。 I highly recommend this book。 I will be going back and rereading some of the material。
